What Exactly is Branding?

Your brand is the core concept behind your ‘corporate image’. It represents the personality of your company, and should be a part of everything your company does, everything it owns, and everything it produces.

There are several different elements that help create a brand. These include:

  • Brand Name
  • Logo
  • Photograph
  • Company Voice & Tone
  • Slogans & Taglines
  • Typography
  • Colour

These elements can help to reflect the value and attributes of your business, and also help it to appeal to right target market. Being properly branded gives the impression of being industry experts and makes the public feel as though they can trust your company, and the products and services you offer.

Brand Identity refers to all visual aspects that form part of the overall brand. These include:

  • Logo
  • Stationery (letterhead, business card, compliment slips, etc.)
  • Marketing Collateral (Flyers, brochures, books, websites, etc.)
  • Products & Packaging (Products and the packaging in which they come in)
  • Apparel Design (Tangible clothing items that are worn by employees)
  • Signage (Interior & exterior design)
  • All of these elements make up an identity and should support the brand as a whole.

Logo

The logo is just one small part of your brand, however it plays a crucial role. A logo is a symbol or wordmark that captures the character and essence of your brand.

Your logo is often the first thing a potential customer will see, so, for business owners, nailing down the right logo is a crucial step in developing your brand.

A successful logo is:

  • Distinctive
  • Simple
  • Practical
  • Versatile
  • Timeless
  • Memorable

The Importance of Consistency

Brand consistency is when a business attempts to communicate messages in-line with their core brand strategy, values and mission statement.

A strong, uniformed brand can help you stand out against competitors and help build brand awareness. Customers are much more likely to purchase from brands that they recognise for their consistent use of visuals such as imagery, colour and typography. And this helps to build customer loyalty and trust.
